Overview

A New Beginning

A youthful indiscretion has cost Lizzie Poole more than just her honor. After five years living in exile, she's finally returning home, but she's still living a secret life. Her best friend Ria's dying wish was for Lizzie to assume her identity, return to London, and make amends that Ria herself would never live to make. Bearing a striking resemblance to her friend, and harboring more secrets than ever before, Lizzie embarks on a journey that tempts her reckless heart once again . . .

A committed clergyman, Geoffrey Somerville's world is upended when he suddenly inherits the title of Lord Somerville. Now he's invited to every ball and sought after by the matchmaking mothers of London society. Yet the only woman to capture his heart is the one he cannot have: his brother's young widow, Ria. Duty demands he deny his feelings, but his heart longs for the mysterious beauty. With both their futures at stake, will Lizzie be able to keep up her façade? Or will she find the strength to share her secret and put her faith in true love?

REVIEW: There are so many things I just loved about this book, but before I get to it, here’s the story in a nut shell.

The story opens with a Prologue in 1846 and our heroine, Lizzie and her brother Tom are traveling by caravan through New South Wales in Australia toward new life and new opportunities.

While on route, we find out the reasons behind their leaving England to come to this strange new land and why both are looking forward to the end of their long journey. Their guide, Mr. Edward Smythe, has taken great interest in Lizzie and is most eager for her to meet his wife. He believes that they just might find that they have some things in common.

In the first chapter of the book the author takes us five years into the future, middle of Victorian era London, and we’re introduced to the hero, Geoffrey Somerville who with his best friend James Simpson, had just run over a young miss with his carriage, in front of James’ Aunt’s home. Both men are intrigued by the young woman that upon close inspection seems to be James’ cousin and Geoffrey’s sister in law, who has disappeared ten years ago after her elopement to his brother Edward.

Geoffrey Somerville has been uprooted from a small perish where he served as a Vicar, to take over a title from his deceased older brother and is still finding his footing into the society and his new duties as Lord Sommerville.

It’s always such a pleasant surprise when an author takes her time in developing the romance and having us follow them along was a trip worth taking.

The rest of the story you’ll have to read for yourselves, and I highly recommend you do.

For a debut novel I was really surprised how well written it was. I am always in awe of a debut author that right out of the gate gives it her all and treats me the reader, with respect by giving me the story that not just rings true but engages my mind as well as my heart.

I found the story well told and filled with characters that were three dimensional and much fun and very entertaining. They also had many lessons to learn and while at it, to teach us as well. How far can one take a lie and not get burned by it? Will it be worth it in the end or will the consequences be so high that one’s soul might be the price?

If you haven’t figured it out by now, this is an inspirational romance and I’ve read a few, and this one is right there at the top, for me at least. The romance is charming, tender and sweet. I haven’t even noticed the lack of ‘hot and heavy’ sexual content [not that there’s anything wrong with said content] and I believe in a book such as this would have been unnecessary. As a matter a fact, I enjoyed it just as much as I do novels that are explicit, and for that I credit Ms. Delamere’s talent for prose.

I am so glad that ‘An Heiress at Heart’ is the first book of this author and in the Love's Grace Series, because it means that there are more to come!

I am very happy to give this debut novel all of my five quills and I highly recommend it to all you romantics out there.
